Time To “Rattle Their Cages”
It’s post Labor Day and although the calendar says there are still a few weeks of summer left, for all intents and purposes the summer has passed – especially in the minds of companies. Typically this is the time when hiring activity picks up. Although we continue to receive mixed messages about the economy and the job market, there seems to be a more positive attitude evolving and even though this may be “cautious optimism” there is no down side risk in “rattling some cages.”
What I mean by that is to reach out to companies, networking contacts and search firms you have contacted in the past to remind them you are still alive and well and here. There is nothing wrong with letting people know that even though you may “have had activity regarding your credentials, you have yet to find the right opportunity.” As such, you continue to be in an active search mode. If your circumstances or mindset have changed regarding geography, industry or discipline now would be the time to let people know. There is no stigma attached to changing your mind or the parameters of your search – especially in today’s market.
It would also be a good idea to enclose another copy of your resume as a reminder of your background just in case it found its way into the “black hole.” It is always advantageous to be in the forefront of an individual’s cerebrum.
Try to remember that the search process is just that – a process and it can be frustrating, anxiety provoking and, at times, downright depressing but you need to continue to be proactive and present a positive, can do attitude.
It’s post Labor Day and a time to re-charge the batteries and put the lazy, hazy days of summer behind.
Carpe Diem and good luck.
