Endowment Fund
What is the Endowment Fund?
This is a fund that holds gifts that are given while living (such as cash or securities) or as a part of a bequest naming the church as a beneficiary of a will, insurance policy, trust, or other financial account. Begun with a $10,000 gift from the will of Helen Skinner, Endowment Fund gifts are typically larger than those given to the Memorial Fund. The principle is preserved in perpetuity, but interest monies may be rolled over or used. A designated committee of church members monitors the fund's investments and makes recommendations to the Consistory on their use. (Click here to see a copy of a more detailed explanation in the Endowment Fund brochure.)
What are these monies used for? Consistory must approve fund money uses; under fund policy, uses are limited to providing seed money for new programs or projects and giving to missions. The Consistory recently approved the use of funds in honor of the church's 150th anniversary. The sum of $1,500 ($10 for each year of the church's existence) will be given to a newly organized Reformed Church.
How do I give to this fund? Gifts of cash are the easiest way to contribute, but gifts of stocks, bonds or mutual fund shares can increase the value of the gift and create tax advantages for the giver. To make an end-of-life bequest, you may designate the church to be a beneficiary in your will (click here to see a draft of a sample codicil), insurance policy, or as part of a designated giving plan such as a charitable trust. In the latter case, a certified financial planner can explain the tax advantages of making such a gift and how it can provide you with income while living.
Who is on the Endowment Committee? John Jacoby chairs the committee; members include Ron Bird, Karen Feeney, Reed Feuster, John Jacoby, Maggie Snead, and ex-officio member Pastor Scott Brown. While the Endowment Committee members can provide basic information, they are not qualified to give personal financial advice.
The gifts given to the Endowment Fund in love and tribute make a wonderful and lasting difference to the ongoing life of the church and to the glory of God.
